Follow the water route
Distinguish gutter overflow, joint leakage and downpipe discharge
Observe from ground level during rain only when it is safe to do so. Note whether water passes over the front or rear of a gutter, leaks at a joint, runs down the wall or fails to leave the base of a downpipe. A short video from a sheltered position can show timing and location more clearly than a close photograph.
- Name the elevation and nearest downpipe.
- Record whether the issue starts in light or heavy rain.
- Do not climb to clear debris or test a joint.
